Meet the Writer
S H A R I N G O U R S T O R Y
My name is Sarah-Lynn Robertson — you can call me Sarah! I’ve been travelling South Africa for about two years with my wonderful hubby, Dale.

You may be wondering if travel has always been my thing.

Was I born with “itchy feet,” ready to explore the world at the first opportunity?

Well, the truth is... NO!

Growing up, I wasn’t one of those kids who pretended to be a mini-modern version of Christopher Columbus — venturing forth into unchartered territory (aka the backyard!), kitted out with my Dad's, giant pair of trusty walking boots, knee-long socks smothering my legs, a compass (anything shiny and round), and a giant backpack twice my body size.

As life went on, I was quite happy imagining these adventurous prospects from a friendly distance, but never seeing them as a possible reality. The idea excited me and filled me with awe, but it also scared me.

Was such a thing possible? Was I capable of such a thing?
I much preferred staying within the realms of my safe zone, knowing what to expect when, and being able to plan the future. I relished in the familiar.

Well, it turns out that this travelling thing eventually did present itself, and Dale and I chose it head-on.

Or should I say, it chose us?

It’s a little unclear exactly who chose whom first, but it does prove that crazy and wonderful things can come true. What I thought was terrifying and beyond reach has become a simply amazing reality.

Here I am today, exploring and travelling South Africa with my hubby while working remotely and living in our caravan.

Just a little more about us:
we’re both in our 30s; with no kiddos (just yet!) and born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I am a freelance writer and editor, while Dale is a leadership and mental health coach.

Prior to beginning this adventure, I had vastly different life goals in mind, such as having a decent house, with a decent job, living in a decent town or city, surrounded by a pretty, decent white-picket fence — you get the idea.

But, as it often goes, life doesn't turn out the way we imagined. And thank goodness for that.

Check out our unique story with more details on how we got travelling, but the short version is that when life gave us lemons, we decided to make the best lemonade we could think of!

Travelling while we work has been one of the best decisions for us, as a couple and as individuals. It’s also been an awesome privilege.

To top it off, I really don’t miss the normal “white-picket fence” life, with all its intricate worries and heavy pressures. Sure, it has its perks, such as having your own bathroom and toilet and a decent-sized living space that you don’t have to fold yourself into at night! You can't just disappear into your favourite comfy couch after a long day at the office. Yes, we don’t get to have those usual enjoyments a normal house presents, but what we have gained is so much more.

Rather than simply having a home, we get to take our home wherever we choose.
Rather than experiencing the same location year in and year out, we experience multiple locations, month to month and sometimes day to day.
Rather than seeing the same old backyard day in and day out, we get to have beautiful estuaries, magnificent beaches, and jaw-dropping mountain views in our 'backyards.'
And best of all, we get to make incredible, unforgettable memories together along the way.

It's a dream, right?... Yup, it is a dream, but not all dreams are perfect.
This caravanning/camping life isn’t like the rom-com movies — with soft, relaxing music playing in the background while we watch the glorious golden sunset on a warm summer’s evening. Yes, we see beautiful skies and breathtaking views while experiencing many wonderful things, but it’s the other less-appealing, real-life happenings that often get left out of the picture in travel blogs.

And sometimes, that’s where all the fun and games really lie.

Caravanning or camping full-time is full of highs and lows and lots in between.

If you’re looking for a more down-to-earth blog that doesn’t only focus on the highs, then you’re in the right place. I like sharing it all. The good and the bad. The pretty and the ugly. The funny and the not-so-funny. The trendy and the less-trendy.

So brace yourself, my friends, and join us on our beautiful and bumpy caravan ride through South Africa.

As I've learned on this journey so far, life becomes tremendously beautiful and meaningful when we leave the expected and comfortable behind and embrace the unseen and seen adventures, both inwardly and outwardly.
